Start Here
New around here? Good. This page is the two-minute tour: what this site is, how the recipes work, and where to begin.
Otoko Cooking is a simple bet: weeknight food can taste like weekend food. Every recipe on this site is tested at least twice in a normal home kitchen — ordinary stove, ordinary pans, grocery-store ingredients. If a step doesn’t earn its place, it gets cut.
How the recipes work
Every recipe page has a Jump to Recipe button up top if you’re in a hurry, a tick-off ingredient list so you can shop from your phone, numbered steps that say why and not just what, and a “Dan’s Notes” box with the one mistake to avoid. Ratings come from readers who actually cooked the thing.
Five recipes to make first
Start with these — they’re the greatest hits and each one teaches a technique you’ll reuse forever:
1. Spicy Miso Ramen with Jammy Soft Egg — blooming pastes in oil for all-day depth in 35 minutes.
2. Smash Burgers with Secret Sauce — why crust beats thickness, every time.
3. Garlic Butter Shrimp Pasta — the pasta-water emulsion trick.
4. Cast-Iron Ribeye with Herb Butter — butter-basting like a steakhouse.
5. Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies — browning butter changes baking forever.
